Trade reviews - 1st Edition
« Thread started on: Feb 8th, 2008, 11:25am »

Folks, the eNHL started that and I really liked it. I thought I could just do the same in here. Please don't take anything personal, I just thought he could be fun to get an overview of the trade, by someone who isn't on the TC. I tried to be as objective as possible, and in fact, I've nothing to win by doing this, other than fun. Hope you like it!

Recent trade reviews

To CHI:
Wendell Patel
Bedrich Kaberle
Jyri Turkula

To PHO
Felipe Whitney
Jonathan Bernier
Stumpy Simmons

Chicago’s side
Patel was once rated as the 10th “negative player”, and look pretty much like offensive depth for the renewed Hawks. Kaberle and Turkula are more balanced players, but still are low in defense. As of now, these acquisitions put Chicago in a similar position than Toronto was in the last seasons: lots of offense with a lack of defense. Pretty surprising from a GM who used to build his teams on defense. However, they traded players they could definitely afford to lose: Whitney was just a Dman like their others, Bernier was expendable with the signature of Denis, and Simmons will be replaced by the new comers.

Phoenix’ side
Phoenix has quietly built a solid team in the past few seasons, and this trade is likely to put them closer to a playoffs spot. Rob is still waiting to see Larsen emerging as a solid starter, so Bernier will be a very reliable backup. Whitney should break the lineup as their 4th Dman, and will get plenty of ice time to fully develop. Simmons isn’t the key player here, but bring some decent depth to the team on the long term.

Advantage
Pretty fair deal, but it looks to me that Phoenix gets the better return in terms of what they needed. They filled 2 weaknesses in this trade, while Chicago brang players I’m not sure they really need. True that they didn’t lose anything important, but knowing Frank, I’d guess this is preparing another trade...

To OTT:
Lyle Janke
Aleksandr Vasyunov
Kjril Otkupshchikov

To CHI :
Kabok Yuran

Ottawa’s side
It’s been a couple of seasons already that we’ve been questionning the lack of depth of the Sens. How come this amazing team couldn’t bring solid 3rd and 4th liners? More than a cap wise move, this trade should help them a lot in the playoffs. Yuran had a wonderful season, but felt apart in the playoffs last season, we’ll see if this move pays off at the bottom line.

Chicago’s side
Smart move for the Hawks: Yuran is the all-around player you want to count on. After trading a lot of big names last season, they now have found someone to rebuild strongly around. True that they traded decent players, but they went for a logic target: talent over depth, a thing they have in quantity anyways.

Advantage
Both teams should make some gains out of this trade, but Yuran will make a much bigger impact for the Hawks. Ottawa solidified their position, but Chicago made a couple of steps forward, gaining some realistic hopes to come back in the playoffs.

To NYI:
Joe Block
CGY 4th 2016
CGY 5th 2016

To CGY:
Daniil Sepols
David Fischer

NY Islanders’ side
This trade just concretize the great work that Ryan did on this team since he took them over. Sepols and Fischer are good players, but Block is just what they needed, if really they needed something. It’s never a bad idea to get better, and Block is just a stud. 99 hitting is a key skill for a Dman, and having a gorilla that can fight and not taking dumb penalties is a must. Adding the late picks is also a smart move: you never know how good a draft can be.

Calgary’s side
Lander probably never thought he’d move Mr. Block, but it looks like a smart move after all. Ironically, the Flames missed a solid D-line since Ryan left. A couple of moves solidified it, and this one probably closes the debate: the Flames defense can now rivalize with the other teams again. A painful but necessary move.

Advantage
The Isles got the best player, and thus the advantage. I don’t think we'll see its impact shortly, but his hits will pay off down the road. The Flames may look good with their defense now, but they probably could have covered other weaknesses if they were to move their best dman. They still need a backup and they will need to make another trade if they want to make their playoffs comeback this year.

Other reviewals to come...

pffft I have built my team around defense, Mister. Have you not seen my blueline lately? Wait till next year when my d-corps looks like this:

Pretecki - Pyett
Quinn - Saevas
Marousek - Peat

When do I ever blame your language skills for anything?

I know what you meant, but I just wanted to brag about my defense.
